Get up. Get dressed. Paint.: Visiting an old 15 Minutes of Mixed Media

Returned from vacation yesterday and found myself needing some inspiration to get back into painting.  Discovered this 15 minutes of mixed media with Rae Missigman and got to work.
Starting out with a page of leftover paint and stamped images.

The messy aftermath

I enjoyed going back to her earlier videos as she used supplies I had forgotten about like the paint pens and the Sharpie Meanstreak.  Simple, fun and got me back into my craft room painting.

Get up. Get Dressed. Paint.

It’s rare to start with a blank page but for this week’s 15 MINUTES OF MIXED MEDIA©
with Rae Missigman that is how this page started.  It was an easy going page without much thinking; simply painting then using the end of the paintbrush to scratch in some blooms in the wet paint.

The carnage

I used this page to remind myself I am a good teacher and to not allow the powers in charge to take that away. To catch you up, I have now been moved 3 times this school year.  Two weeks into the school year I was transferred from teaching Chemistry in the high school into an elementary school teaching science to 6th and 7th graders.  Five long, stressful weeks later (and just after I was getting the hang of things) I got word I was being transferred back to the high school to teach Biology, Physics, and 7th and 8th graders in the alternative ed program: again, no experience in this.  Last week I packed up my stuff, yet again, and moved.  This week I started with a whole new set of kid learning the ropes of teaching alternative ed students.  *sigh...

Noticing

She removes more paint than I seem to be able to by scraping an old credit card over the wet paint, leaving her page with much more white space than mine.  I also find I’m hesitant to wipe up too much of the paint yet I always like her finished page better than mine because of that.

Free Mixed Media Workshop

Wednesday via a fellow blogger I discovered Permission to Play- a Free Mixed Media Workshop with Carolyn Dube.  Yesterday I watched the introductory lessons, downloaded and painted my Permission to Play permission slip.  My plan is to use this class to play in paint on week nights when I normally do very little creating.  Winter is a struggle for me and my hope is to begin a practice of spending time in the evenings creating to ease the stress after a long day of teaching.

Do you want to play along with me?

A Second Look on the 2nd with Altered Book Lovers

Painting completed my life.
~Frida Kahlo

Painting is scary.  Painting is intimidating.  These statements are true when you want to paint artistically yet you cannot draw, not even stick figures.  So trying to paint something that resembles a vase of flowers or a face is out of the question.  This is where mixed media painting comes in.  A way to paint using all types of paint and texture without all the worry of having it look like something identifiable..

In March of this year I started a weekly painting practice I call Get up. Get dressed. Paint.  This is the first entry for the series.

4/21 Week 1: The Beginning
I learned that when I make the first art of the day mine, I feel better, more energized ,more confident.  No cleaning, no searching Pinterest for inspiration, no working on swaps…simply painting for myself.
Because I admire Rae Missigman’s work I went to her 15 Minute Mixed Media on her blog and painted THIS journal page as I watched the video.  Of course it took me longer than 15 minutes but I painted…for me.

What I learned:

  • I discovered a way to get around my anxiety of doodling.  I used leftover punches from plain white card stock for the flowers.  I glued them on then used paint markers to color them in. Will definitely be doing more of this.
  • White gel pen will not write where glue stick got smeared on the page.
  • I am slowly accepting my handwriting as being okay.

Get up. Get Dressed. Paint.

Another early morning painting session with Rae Missigman’s SUMMER RE-RUN SERIES - 15 MINUTE FAVORITES.  This is week 17 of this painting journey and I find I still look forward to getting up with my morning coffee and painting the morning away.

I have decided to begin a “play practice” where I allow myself to practice and play with the different techniques I stumble across while blog hopping.  My Pinterest boards are full of inspiring journal pages and techniques but what good are they sitting there in cyber space?  I want to create a space where I can try these techniques without judgement where I can learn and play.

Do you have a journal in which you allow yourself to practice and learn; no judgement just a place to play?  If so, please leave a comment on how it helps you in your creative journey.

SOC week 6: orange + orange + blue

By coincidence, this was the quote on my Seize the Day calendar yesterday.  I have been focusing on cleaning, organizing, and purging my home, trying to regain some control after the looong school year.  This quote spoke to me, reminding me of my commitment and my One Little Word, simplify.  I chose to use the dandelion seed stencil because of its association with growth, warmth, clarity, healing, radiance, and illumination.  Most of us can remember making a wish then blowing on a dandelion seed head.  My wish is purge my home of everything we don’t need and have a less cluttered life.

Colors used:
Dina Wakley tangerine

Dylusions ink spray in squeezed orange
Apple Barrel laguna
