Get up. Get dressed. Paint. Week 4

Joining  Rae Missigman for another 15 Minutes of  Mixed Media

I had 2 “screeching halt moments” with this page.

The first one came when she did her writing.  What is she writing?  More importantly, what do I write?  After a minute or two of paralyzing thoughts I simply copied some words from my favorite desk calendar

When she started painting the tree I came to several mini screeching halts:
1.       When I filled in the tree with the oil pastel my pencil smeared but hers didn’t appear to, why?  Later I realized I was gessoing my pages because they are thin and she wasn’t.  Was this why?  Of course I had to know.

This obviously wasn’t the answer so is it the paper, the pencil I’m using or because I am using Crayola oil pastels and she is using theseDoes it make a difference that hers are water soluble?
2.   What paint covers oil pastels?
3.      What is the difference between fluorescent pink (which she used) and neon pink (which I had)?  After several minutes of Google searching no answer appeared and I decided it didn’t matter because I was going to use what I had.  I still want to know so the research will continue when I go to the craft store and do a comparison.
4.   The Stibilo black pencil just smeared and made a mess when I applied the acrylic paint but hers didn’t appear to, why?

I am unhappy with the pencils smearing but the whole idea behind these sessions is practicing and learning.

What I learned this week:

Ø  to use water colors as a background
Ø  brown is not a color I want to use again
Ø  until I can figure out the pencil smearing I need to write with permanent black pen.
Ø  better yet, don’t use the oil pastels with either of the pencils.
Ø  I need to let go of worrying that my scribbling don’t look like scribbling and simply do it.

  3. Firstly, I love your quote, something I need to be reminded of for sure. Secondly, I love your page. I didn't watch Rae's so I am not comparing it to anything, but I think you did a good job. I think you are doing a wonderful job at thinking your way through why your results are different. I tend to beat myself up or stop when that happens, and I think it is great that you are using this as a learning experience.

  4. I look at situations like you are experiencing here as great learning experiences, ways to do research just like you are and try different things. It is so good for the mind to problem solve like that.
