What's On Your Workdesk? Wednesday

Sari ribbon and a cat, that’s what’s taking up most of my desk space this weekend.  Pandora visits but rarely stays.  The colorful mound of ribbon must have been too good of a napping spot to pass up.  It’s early morning and the sun light is beginning to stream in.  The heat and humidity have been unbearable this week, thus the need for the fan. My room is upstairs and the sun shines in heating it up even with the shades drawn.

The odd assortment of orange and pink scattered across the desk is for a Free Themed rolo swap.  My partner likes these colors together along with glimmer and sparkly ephemera.  Rummaging through my stash I found the orange game card.  I thought it might give her a chuckle!

I struggled with getting this one started.   I didn't want to cover the pretty paper with modeling paste but I found myself stumped as what else to do.  Remembering the cotton crochet thread on my sewing machine drawer, I did this:
Most of it got covered up by the game card and flower but just enough peeks through for texture.

For the second rolo I pushed modeling paste through drywall tape then used india ink to color the paste after it dried.  The lace was sprayed with pewter Perfect Pearls Mist and I dotted the ribbon with Ranger Glossy Accents.  Before that could dry I sprinkled ebony glitter on them.

The shimmer doesn't show up in this photo but it looked great when it was all dry.

School has started and my days are now filled with papers to grade, lesson plans and anxiety.  And I am taking a welding class two nights a week.  Wait...welding?  Yup!  I've wanted to learn how do it for years and finally took the leap.  First class was last night and I wish you could have been there to see the looks on the guys faces when I walked in the room wearing my dress, hose, and heels. I allowed myself get intimidated because most of them have had some experience while I know absolutely nothing other than what a welding helmet looks like.  As I sat there panic creeped in and I thought about ditching the whole thing. Second class is Thursday, will keep you updated.

Joining up with What’s onYour Workdesk? Wednesday where desk snooping is not only allowed but all part of the fun!

  1. Well done for leaping in and trying something so radically different! Keep at it, who cares how long it takes. I love welded art too, have a got a couple of pieces in the garden made from junk (by someone else, not me!)
I'm not surprised Pandora wanted to sleep on that heap of colour and texture, it's fab :-)

  3. Pandora looks like she's Queen of the desk up there doesn't she - not sure my nerves would cope with sharing my desk with a cat! I love the cards you made - I love orange and pink together, so bright and zingy.
Good luck with the welding class - it must have taken a bit of nerve to walk in to the first class, so well dont and keep at it - I'm impressed!
Hope you have a great week and thanks so much for stopping by my desk earlier,

  7. Well done you for trying something different. Keep at it. Just be yourself and after a while the novelty will wear off and you will be just 'one of the boys'. I've been there too and it was a positive experience overall (apart from the beginning when you get the stares and then the comments and the jokes, after that it was great).

  8. Welding? Seriously? Wow! Is it for crafting purposes? Surely you're not looking for a career change! Do tell us more next time, Diane. Love your rolo cards and the photo of the kitty sitting on your sari ribbons is priceless! I'm a big fan of sari ribbons too. I'm so sorry you're experiencing anxiety - I know all about it, too - I'm consciously trying to avoid stressful situations, but it's not always possible. Crafting does help, I find. 9. Wow, good on you for trying something new. Who knows where a basic knowledge of welding could take you! Good luck with it. I am very intrigued by the game card. I love the sari ribbons too. I sometimes use sari silk in my needle-felted pictures. Thanks for sharing your lovely rolo cards. Happy crafting :-)

Great to read of your welding class...I understand how the creeping intimidation got hold of you, but next week you'll be fine...the guys wouldn't be there if they knew how to do it already huh!

  17. Swooning over that sari silk ribbon!
Pandora does look quite regal on her throne.
My son and his kids (then 7 & 9!!) Welded me a coat and hat tree, using railroad spikes and a metal pipe! You'll do great!
